Entognathous hexapods

Insects and their relatives

  1. Insects are not the only arthropods with 6 legs. Three classes of animals closely related to insects also have six legs i.e. belong to the HEXAPODA.
  2. These non-insect hexapods maintain their mandibles concealed inside the head capsule when not in use and belong to the Entognatha. Hexapods whose mandibles remain exposed and not extensible are called Insects.
  3. Entognathous Hexapoda include:
    1. Protura
    2. Collembola
    3. Diplura
