Entognathous hexapods
Insects and their relatives
- Insects are not the only arthropods with 6 legs. Three classes of animals closely related to insects also have six legs i.e. belong to the HEXAPODA.
- These non-insect hexapods maintain their mandibles concealed inside the head capsule when not in use and belong to the Entognatha. Hexapods whose mandibles remain exposed and not extensible are called Insects.
- Entognathous Hexapoda include:
- Protura
- Collembola
- Diplura
