Greek "embio" meaning lively and "ptera" meaning wings; Common name: webspinners.

  1. Minute to small (10 mm or less)
  2. Chewing mouthparts
  3. Compound eyes, no ocelli
  4. Males of most species winged (females apterous)
  5. Wings bend forward allowing insects to rapidly travel backwards in galleries
  6. Wings are stiffened during flight by hemolymph flow
  7. Antennae filiform with 16-32 segments
  8. Male cerci are asymmetrical and differ in size
