Greek "embio" meaning lively and "ptera" meaning wings; Common name: webspinners.
- Minute to small (10 mm or less)
- Chewing mouthparts
- Compound eyes, no ocelli
- Males of most species winged (females apterous)
- Wings bend forward allowing insects to rapidly travel backwards in galleries
- Wings are stiffened during flight by hemolymph flow
- Antennae filiform with 16-32 segments
- Male cerci are asymmetrical and differ in size
