- Chewing mouthparts
- Compound eyes present in winged (alate) forms, lacking in all workers
- Alate forms are reproductives
- Antennae are short monifiliform or filiform
- When winged, the wings are identical, membranous
- Shed by a basal fracture line
- Pair of short cerci
- Depression on front of head called fontanelle in many species
