  1. Minute, soft-bodied, slender and pale colored insects with chewing mouthparts
  2. Characteristic 9-segmented filiform antenna
  3. Compound eyes and dorsal ocelli in winged forms
  4. Wingless forms blind
  5. Two pairs of wings when present
  6. Forewing larger than hind wing with reduced venation, shed by breakage
