Systematic Entomology

SYLLABUS
This course concerns the recognition of all major families of insects in North America. Each week the student is given identified specimens of about 40 families. The student is expected to learn identifying characteristics of each family with the aid of their textbook and microscope.
Objectives
To learn to recognize the major families of insects in North America.
Course Outline
In a weekly quiz the student must sight identify specimens without aid of notes or textbook. Spellings of all scientific names must be correct to receive full credit.
Each student must also complete a term project.
Prerequisites
General Entomology or General Biology

Students may be assigned projects related to the class at the discretion of the instructor.
Each student enrolled in ENY5155 must also complete a term project. The project concerns the recognition of 20 species in a genus or 20 genera in a family decided in mutual agreement with the instructor. The project can be based on actual specimens or library research. The written portion of this project must include a synopsis of each species or genus and a dichotomous key of all 20 species or genera as written by the student.
This is a college-level class preparing students for a professional life. Spelling and grammar count!
Grades will be based on quizzes,and projects. Bonus points may be assigned by the instructor at his sole discretion for class participation.

Final quiz - 25
Term report - 25 (graduate students only)
