Because of strong university support of these collections, FAMU has received funding from the National Science Foundation under its Division of Biological Infrastructure. Funds for the storage, curation, and incorporation of donated materials into the main collections were originally awarded in 1998, followed by supplementary funds to train undergraduate students and present funding which continues early objectives and is further concerned with putting information online in a form that can be accessed electronically by any other museum or research scientist in the world. The joint support of the University and the National Science Foundation has played an important role in the international recognition of Florida A&M University within the scientific community. Additionally, support from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to conduct research on the occurrence and distribution of major aquatic insect groups in Florida has enhanced the quality and breadth of the collections.

FAMU is an affiliate of the Florida State Collection of Arthropods, Division of Plant Protection, Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services, whose mission objectives include continuing to build and maintain the best possible worldwide collection of terrestrial and aquatic arthropods in support of research, education, and regulatory functions, and to serve as a repository for type, voucher and research specimens. As such, all research material at FAMU belongs to the State of Florida.
